Institutional Strengthening Standards for Kenyan Civil Society Organisations

This resource was designed to help Kenyan civil society organizations (CSOs) working in the health sector to become more effective, efficient, results oriented, and sustainable. Published in 2014 under the USAID-funded FANIKISHA Institutional Strengthening Project, it features standards and indicators for institutional strengthening that draw upon global best practices while being customized and relevant to the Kenyan context.

The standards and indicators were developed through a collaborative process facilitated by FANIKISHA with 41 representatives from the Government of Kenya, civil society, academic institutions, development partners, and donors.

The standards define both what it means to be a strong and sustainable civil CSO in Kenya and how organizations can deliver quality institutional strengthening services to build CSO capacity. It covers 10 strengthening categories:
