Management Sciences for Health to Strengthen Haiti’s Health Infrastructure
A Five-Year Program Supports Haiti’s Path to Health Care Self-Reliance
Arlington, VA—May 15, 2019—Management Sciences for Health (MSH) announced today that it has been selected by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) to strengthen Haiti’s health system. The five-year project—Haiti’s Health Leadership Program (HLP)—will support the Haitian government’s efforts to build an optimal health system that is accessible, accountable, affordable, and reliable.
“This project reflects an important new step in simultaneously strengthening the country’s health system while transitioning the work to local NGOs,” said Marian W. Wentworth, MSH’s President & CEO. “This is an exciting transition project under USAID’s new agenda, and we are thrilled to be working side by side with them to define a new way forward in development, co-development, and, ultimately, self-reliance.”
MSH will lead the program in collaboration with local organizations to reform the country’s health system, with a focus on health financing and human resources for health, while strengthening local leadership and transitioning ownership to the Haitian government early in the process.
HLP builds on MSH’s trusted relationships in Haiti’s public and private sectors—and across the political spectrum—that were created by delivering resilient programs with measurable, sustainable results, most recently on the World Bank Projet d’Amélioration de la Santé Maternelle et Infantile a travers des Services Sociaux Intégrés (PASMISSI) and the USAID Leadership, Management and Governance program.
A critical element of HLP will be preparing one or more local partners to receive direct USAID funding, fully assume the technical assistance role of the MSH team at the end of the second year, and be directly responsible and accountable for achieving HLP results and objectives by the program’s third and fourth years. This innovative approach is a key aspect of USAID’s support to Haiti in the country’s journey toward self-reliance.
Implementing partners include Group Croissance, a Haitian consulting firm specializing in health finance and budget transparency, and the women-led Centre de Formation et d’Encadrement Technique, a Haitian consulting organization specializing in human resource management.
