Alaine Umubyeyi Nyaruhirira has 19 years of combined experience as a lecturer, researcher, and public health professional. She is currently the senior laboratory advisor for MSH, providing technical support to the national laboratory networks of several countries in sub-Saharan Africa to build capacity in implementing TB and HIV-related services. Alaine has developed broad expertise in all TB lab-related matters, including QA/QC systems, data management and analysis, designing national sample transportation systems, and developing training materials and standard operating procedures for new diagnostic techniques.
Prior to joining MSH, Alaine worked as a researcher and trainer on MDR-TB and molecular epidemiology at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Belgium and at the Columbia University Project (ICAP) in Rwanda. She holds a doctorate in biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences and a master's degree in public health from the Free University at Brussels, Belgium.
