Senior Principal Technical Advisor, Local Capacity Strengthening Practice Area

Dr. Paul Ickx, Senior Principal Technical Advisor in the Local Capacity Strengthening Practice Area, has more than 35 years of experience developing, managing, implementing, and advising child survival and family planning programs. He began working for MSH in 1988. Most recently, he has been supporting the Assistance for Families and Indigent Afghans to Thrive (AFIAT) project, among other activities. His previous positions at MSH include Senior Technical Advisor for the Strengthening Pharmaceutical Systems project in Afghanistan; Senior Technical Advisor for USAID’s flagship child survival program, BASICS, in Afghanistan; Consultant Advisor on Child Health, Pharmaceutical Management, and Health Information Systems for the TechServe Program in Afghanistan; and Health Management Information Systems Advisor for the Rural Expansion of Afghanistan’s Community-Based Healthcare Program and a similar position on the Afghanistan Health Sector Enhancement Program. As Principal Program Associate with MSH based in the US, France, Haiti, and Kazakhstan, Dr. Ickx served as Deputy Director in charge of operations and evaluation research on the BASICS II project and consulted in the areas of child survival, health information systems, pharmaceutical management, and family planning for three centrally funded USAID projects. His assignments took him to Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America and many were carried out in close cooperation with UNICEF, WHO, and the World Bank. Before joining MSH, Dr. Ickx worked with Médecins Sans Frontières in Afghanistan, first as Team Leader of expatriate medical teams and later as Medical Director of the Afghanistan Mission. He is fluent in English, French, and Dutch.
