Management Sciences for Health Welcomes Dr. Dan Schwarz as Associate Vice President for Global Health Systems Innovation

Arlington, VA—Management Sciences for Health (MSH), a leading global health NGO, announced today the appointment of Dr. Dan Schwarz as Associate Vice President for Global Health Systems Innovation, the team responsible for oversight of MSH’s technical expertise and innovation in health systems.

“I am thrilled to welcome Dan to MSH. He brings with him an impressive combination of deep mission commitment and a track record of extraordinary innovation. As a leader committed to localization, a technical expert, and a practicing clinician, I believe Dan will bring the perfect combination of vision and on-the-ground experience that will help our partner countries tackle the challenges they face as they seek to develop equitable access to quality health care and universal health coverage for their populations,” said Marian W. Wentworth, MSH’s President and CEO.

Dr. Schwarz is a physician leader with over fifteen years’ experience in building organizations and leading teams to strengthen health care delivery. Having worked in over thirty countries globally, Dr. Schwarz has focused on supporting public sector government health systems to improve their primary and referral level health care, specifically for the most marginalized and vulnerable communities.

Prior to joining MSH, Dr. Schwarz was the Director of Primary Health Care at Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where he led work in more than 20 countries, across four continents. Previously, Dr. Schwarz was the founding Executive Director, and, subsequently, the Chief Medical Officer for Possible. In this role, he helped to build and lead an innovative public private partnership for healthcare delivery in Nepal. Over eleven years, Dr. Schwarz helped grow Possible’s team to over 450 (more than 95% of whom were Nepali) while expanding services to more than 500,000 people in some of the most remote and underserved districts of the country. Before his work in Nepal, Dan worked for Partners In Health in multiple countries, and several other non-governmental organizations throughout sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia.

“I am honored and inspired to be joining the MSH team at this important moment in history. The inequities of our world are stark, and yet, I strongly believe that we have the opportunity – and, indeed, the moral obligation – to address these injustices and deliver on our collective commitments to the human right to health. I look forward to working side by side with our partners around the world in order to advance this mission together, for the children of tomorrow,” said Dr. Schwarz.

Clinically, Dr. Schwarz is a general internist and pediatrician from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital, where he will continue to see patients and teach medical students and residents several weeks a year. Dr. Schwarz completed his undergraduate training at Vassar College, his MD at Brown University, and his MPH at Harvard University. He begins his tenure at MSH on June 6, 2022.
