Peter Buijs

Peter Buijs is a former CFO of CARE USA, a leading nongovernment organization focused on international humanitarian, development, and social justice work. In that role, Buijs oversaw the organization’s global financial management activities, including Corporate Accounting, Financial Planning and Analysis, Award Management and Donor Compliance, and Treasury. He also led a large turn-around effort to strengthen CARE’s financial position by improving the organization’s financial management capacity and building a solid foundation for investment in revenue growth and innovative programming.  

Buijs spent many years in leadership positions at CARE’s country and regional offices across Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean, focusing on sustainable results and emphasizing partnerships with state and non-state actors, innovation, advocacy, impact measurement, learning, and accountability in a broad range of programs, including health, education, food and water security, microfinance, and governance.  

Prior to joining CARE, Buijs managed sustainable development programs and provided consulting services in Africa and Asia with a primary focus on infrastructure and economic development.  

Buijs holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Institute of Higher Education in Engineering and Technology in Zwolle, Netherlands, and a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University.
