Environmental AMR Surveillance in Nigeria

This policy brief calls for urgent expansion of environmental health antimicrobial resistance (EH-AMR) surveillance in Nigeria, an essential but historically underdeveloped component of the country’s One Health response. While surveillance systems for human and animal health have advanced, environmental pathways remain a critical gap despite being a key transmission route for resistant pathogens. Drawing on progress under the Fleming Fund Country Grant Phase II, the brief highlights key milestones including the establishment of a reference laboratory in Port Harcourt and the development of standardized surveillance protocols. It offers practical, actionable recommendations for policymakers and partners to expand laboratory networks, operationalize national protocols, secure sustainable financing, and strengthen private sector engagement to support a comprehensive, integrated AMR response.
