Good Governance in Civil Society Organizations
Good Governance in Civil Society Organizations
The concept of good governance has gained prominence in development programs over the past decade. Good governance in the health sector and other sectors that have an impact on health is recognized as essential to achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Ministries of health and donors are increasingly looking to civil society organizations (CSOs) as active partners in the delivery of health services. Like public sector institutions, CSOs require sound leadership and management and well-functioning organizational structures and systems to deliver services effectively and efficiently.
This issue of The eManager presents the concept of good governance, including typical governance structures, board member qualifications, the roles and responsibilities of boards and management, board committees, and how to address common board challenges. Although CSOs vary greatly in size and mandate, the general principles presented in this eManager are relevant to all CSOs, and any nonprofit organization seeking to become more effective will find valuable information in this issue.
