Management Sciences for Health Supports New World Bank Fund for Pandemic Preparedness
Arlington, VA—July 1, 2022—Management Sciences for Health (MSH) applauds the World Bank’s decision to establish a new financial intermediary fund for global health security and pandemic preparedness. The new fund, which seeks to close an estimated $10.5 billion gap, aims to help low- and middle-income countries prepare for future pandemics. It has so far garnered more than $1 billion in pledges from the United States, the European Commission, Germany, Singapore, Indonesia, the Wellcome Trust, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Filling a much-needed gap in the global health architecture, the details of the fund remain to be ironed out, but it is expected to focus on critical gaps in country-level preparedness; build regional and global capacity to enhance disease surveillance; and support information sharing, technical assistance, and learning.
“This decision signals a landmark investment to help the world better prepare for and prevent the next pandemic,” said MSH Senior External Affairs Manager Ashley Arabasadi. “We know that more sustainable funding is needed to make the world safer from pandemics, and we will continue to work with governments, civil society, and the private sector to help reach the total fund amount.”
