Strengthening Nigeria’s Community Health Workforce

Building the skills, systems, and institutions needed to support community health workers at scale

Management Sciences for Health (MSH), through MSH Nigeria, is partnering with the Mastercard Foundation to strengthen Nigeria’s community health workforce and expand opportunities for young people working across the health sector.

The Community Health Workforce Program (CHWP) supports the reskilling and upskilling of 44,000 community-based health workers across 17 states, while strengthening the institutions, data systems, and coordination needed to better plan, manage, and support the workforce over time.

The program builds on Nigeria’s priorities for a stronger, more sustainable community health system—one that equips health workers with the skills they need, brings services closer to communities, and creates pathways for young people to contribute to the country’s health and development goals.

A Country-Led Platform for Workforce Transformation

CHWP is designed to strengthen more than individual skills. It supports the systems and institutions that determine how community health workers are trained, deployed, supported, and managed.

By working through Nigerian institutions and partnerships, MSH Nigeria and the Mastercard Foundation aim to build capabilities that can continue to grow beyond the life of the program and contribute to a stronger, more responsive health system.
