The social and economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic is an extreme but relevant example of the types of challenges public health leaders face today. Its disruptive force and life-altering impacts were unexpected, and it exposed and exacerbated the weaknesses and inequity in health systems. The exponential expansion of the pandemic catapulted COVID-19 to the top of national and international priority lists, but suboptimal containment has cast doubt on our pandemic preparedness and ability to respond. 

COVID-19 has also reversed public health gains made over the last decade, particularly in TB, MDR-TB, and HIV control. Over 90% of countries have reported disruptions in essential health services and 51% in TB services.
