Ethiopia Health Workforce Improvement Program
Ethiopia Health Workforce Improvement Program
Overview
The USAID-funded Ethiopia Health Workforce Improvement Program (HWIP) is a five-year program (2020-2025) led by Jhpiego to strengthen Ethiopia’s health workforce. As a sub-awardee between 2020 and 2022, MSH led strategies to improve health workforce management—including those in health emergencies such as COVID-19—and worked with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health, Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and other local institutions to strengthen the leadership, management, and governance capacity at all levels of the health system.
Specifically, we worked with human resources managers to strengthen planning, policies, and practices; use data to quantify, establish, and revise staffing levels and standards; scale the national performance management system; and promote coordination among stakeholders to improve the work environment and better retain workers.
