Management Sciences for Health a Key Partner in Jhpiego-led Consortium to Strengthen Ethiopia’s Health Workforce

Arlington, VA—May 26, 2020—Management Sciences for Health (MSH) announced today that it will support global health NGO Jhpiego to implement the newly awarded USAID Ethiopia Health Workforce Improvement Program (HWIP). As a subawardee, MSH will lead strategies to improve health workforce management, including in health emergencies such as COVID-19, and to strengthen the leadership, management, and governance capacity of health institutions.

Specifically, MSH will work with human resources managers to strengthen planning, policies, and practices; use data to quantify, establish, and revise staffing levels and standards; scale the national performance management system; and promote coordination among stakeholders to improve the work environment and better retain workers.

MSH will also work with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health, Ministry of Science and Higher Education, and other local institutions to strengthen leadership and management practices and operations at all levels.

In addition to providing technical assistance to optimize Ethiopia’s health workforce, HWIP seeks to reduce gender disparities in the health workforce by addressing related challenges during workforce development and deployment and working with gender offices in higher education institutions to provide technical and financial incentives to overcome gender barriers.

The end goal: Ethiopia’s health workforce will be available, accessible, and capable of delivering quality health care services, helping the Government of Ethiopia meet its goal of providing universal health care to all citizens. Along with MSH, the Jhpiego-led consortium includes AMREF, Ethiopian Midwives Association, Ethiopian Medical Association, Ethiopian Association of Anesthetist, and Ethiopian Nursing Association.
