Technical Brief: Intra-Conflict Response—Virtual Private Network, A Local Solution for Real-time GenExpert Data Sharing and Use

Due to internal conflict, the internet connectivity in the Amhara region of Ethiopia was disrupted. The disruption of internet access significantly impacted the LabXpert connectivity solution, which is used to provide real-time notification of TB testing results to clinicians and track patients with positive results in a timely manner. To combat this, the USAID Eliminate TB Project piloted the use of virtual private networks (VPNs) to restore and maintain connectivity. The use of VPNs to enable access to data in real time was a critical innovation to ensure continuity of TB services amid conflict.
