Management Sciences for Health Applauds Committee Vote on the 2023 End TB Now Act, Urges Passage in Full House

Arlington, VA—July 26, 2023—Management Sciences for Health (MSH) applauds the US House Foreign Affairs Committee’s passage of H.R. 1776—the End Tuberculosis Now Act of 2023—and calls for the bill’s speedy passage by the full House of Representatives. MSH is grateful for the continued bipartisan leadership of the bill’s authors, Representatives Ami Bera (D-CA) and María Elvira Salazar (R-FL).

The legislation seeks to bolster US programming to combat tuberculosis (TB) globally and address the detrimental impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on efforts to end TB. The bill will improve coordination among US government agencies that engage in international TB activities and prioritize research and the development of new tools to prevent, diagnose, treat, and control TB worldwide. It also will increase assistance for the World Health Organization’s and the Stop TB Partnership’s efforts to improve the capacity of affected countries to implement the End TB Strategy as well as other global initiatives to control multidrug-resistant and extensively multidrug-resistant TB.

Despite being largely preventable, treatable, and curable, TB remains one of the world’s deadliest communicable diseases, infecting more than 10 million people a year and claiming more lives than HIV/AIDS and malaria combined. This legislation will strengthen US leadership in the fight to eliminate this disease and align US efforts with the global movement to end TB as a public health challenge by 2030.
