AI-Powered Chest X-Ray Screening for TB Case Finding: Field Experience from Ethiopia
Artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chest X-ray screening is helping Ethiopia identify TB cases that traditional symptom screening often misses, particularly among high-risk and asymptomatic populations. Through the Eliminate TB Project, MSH supported the introduction and scale-up of this innovation, contributing to the detection of 1,660 TB cases between January 2025 and March 2026 and strengthening Ethiopia’s capacity to deploy new technologies within national TB systems. This technical brief shares operational lessons, results, and recommendations for integrating AI-assisted screening into national programs in ways that are practical, scalable, and locally sustainable. The findings show how targeted health investments can improve early detection, strengthen disease surveillance, and contribute to more resilient systems that help reduce TB transmission and advance global health security.
