Compendium of Tools & Strategies to Achieve Universal Access to TB Care for At-Risk and Vulnerable Groups
This compendium is for the use of national TB program staff in high burden settings who are trying to identify strategies to reach at-risk and vulnerable communities more effectively it contains very summarized descriptions of over 120 approaches to reach and serve at-risk and vulnerable populations, and links to over 650 tools and reference materials.
The strategies are organized chronologically, from prevention to early diagnosis to treatment to recovery to sustained long-term health. This structure is reflected in nine chapters:
- Seek Care for Symptoms
- Seek out Those who May be at Higher Risk
- Reach and Appropriate Facility
- Obtain a Timely, Accurate Diagnosis
- Receive Effective TB Treatment
- Take TB Treatment Correctly
- Cope with any Challenges of TB Treatment
- Fully Recover from TB
- Document and Learn from the Process
The TB community is encouraged to browse the compendium to select approaches that meet the needs of specific types of TB patients. The compendium is not designed to be read from cover to cover because it covers overlapping and inter-related concepts.
The compendium was developed by technical staff from the USAID-funded TB CARE I project and its partners including the KNCV Tuberculosis Foundation (KNCV), the Japan Anti-Tuberculosis Association (JATA), the World Health Organization (WHO), Management Sciences for Health (MSH), and the American Thoracic Society (ATS). Content was also adapted from the work of Tim Ryan at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and theIntroducing New Tools and Approaches (INAT) subgroup of the STOP TB Partnership.
The compendium will be updated regularly as more evidence emerges in this rapidly changing field.
