Global Fund Program to Implement a National Surveillance System for Health Products in Cameroon

Overview

A strong pharmacovigilance system ensures that every patient—whether receiving treatment for HIV, tuberculosis, malaria or other diseases—can trust that their medicines are safe and effective.

With funding from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and implemented by Cameroon’s Ministry of Public Health with support from MSH, the activity aims to improve the country’s capacity to monitor the safety and quality of new medicines. Building on the success of a 2023 pilot program, this activity strengthens Cameroon’s pharmacovigilance system by:

  • Enhancing the skills of health workers and technical staff
  • Updating guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Improving coordination and governance among national stakeholders

These efforts ensure a more effective surveillance of medicines and health products and a more resilient national health system.

Key objectives:

  • Develop and refine best practices for monitoring and evaluation
  • Strengthen stakeholder capacity in leadership, governance, and implementation of SOPs
  • Design the country’s pharmacovigilance strategic plan, including tools and resources such as a communications campaign to raise awareness of health product security
