Burkina Faso

In Burkina Faso our programs have increased women’s access to skilled birth attendance, improved maternal and child health, and supported the containment of antimicrobial resistance by slowing the emergence of resistant bacteria and preventing the spread of resistant infections.

Overview

In the remote, arid Sahel region in northern Burkina Faso, our programs increased women’s access to skilled birth attendance; reduced maternal and neonatal mortality by strengthening the technical skills of maternal and newborn health care providers, including midwives; and advocated alongside regional health teams in promoting budgeting for family planning. To strengthen access to quality medicines, we assisted in strengthening the country’s pharmaceutical service delivery, improving the rational use of antimicrobials in both the human and animal health sectors, and strengthening regulatory frameworks needed to contain antimicrobial resistance.
