How Strong Pharmaceutical Systems Can Prevent the Spread of Superbugs

In a recent op-ed published in Health Policy Watch, Francis “Kofi” Aboagye-Nyame calls on global leaders to take decisive action in the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). With the UN High-Level Meeting on AMR approaching, Kofi’s timely article highlights the devastating impact of AMR—which directly caused more than 1.3 million deaths in 2019 alone—and urges investments to bolster pharmaceutical systems, supply chains, laboratory systems, and public education on responsible antimicrobial use.

MSH commends global leaders for approving a political declaration at last week’s United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting (HLM) on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) committing to reduce the estimated 4.95 million human deaths associated with bacterial AMR annually by 10% by 2030.
